Houston Cinema Arts Society (HCAS) is pleased to announce a new series of year-round programming to complement its signature Houston Cinema Arts Festival.

Leading up to the 2015 Houston Cinema Arts Festival (Nov. 12-19), HCAS will host an Artist’s Choice Film Series at Brasil beginning on April 20; a special complimentary screening of Houston Ballet documentary Sons de L’âme (“Sounds of the Soul”) at Miller Outdoor Theatre on May 8; and the 5th Annual Julydoscope celebration at Discovery Green on July 18.

HCAS plans to host seven films per year at the new Artist’s Choice Film Series, where Houston visual, performing and literary artists will select and introduce a feature film about their own art form, followed by a moderated discussion with the audience. Confirmed so far for the series at Brasil are photographer Geoff Winningham with Eadweard Muybridge Zoopraxographer on April 20 at 8 p.m.; Alley Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Boyd with Theatre of Blood on June 16 at 8:30 p.m.; and Mydolls musician Trish Herrera with Quadrophenia on Aug. 17 at 8:30 p.m.

On Friday, May 8, at 8 p.m., HCAS along with Miller Outdoor Theatre and Houston Ballet will present the stunning documentary dance performance film Sons de L’âme (“Sounds of the Soul”), which made its world premiere at Miller Outdoor Theatre during the 2014 Houston Cinema Arts FestivalThe film is being presented again due to unseasonably low temperatures that prevented many from attending in November. Choreographed by Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch and set to Frédéric Chopin piano pieces performed by Lang Lang, Sons de L’âme was taped in Paris, where Houston Ballet’s performances premiered to standing ovations at the historic Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in October 2013.

Julydoscope will take place at Discovery Green on Saturday, July 18. Live dance performances by five Houston dance companies will be presented in collaboration with Dance Source Houston followed by a film to be announced soon. The evening of dance and film is provided free for the public.
