Houston Cinema Arts Society’s 5th Annual Julydoscope – a free evening of dance, music and film at Discovery Green on Saturday, July 18 – will feature a screening of rapper Nasir “Nas” Jones’ acclaimed 2014 film “Shake the Dust” introduced by Bun B following performances by several Houston-based dance companies selected by Dance Source Houston.
Festivities will begin at 7 p.m. with performances on the Anheuser-Busch Stage by high-energy multi-dance companies including Nritya Dance, City Dance and MET Dance. An outdoor screening of “Shake the Dust” will begin at 8:45 p.m. DJ Dizzle of BOOM92 FM, Houston’s Only Classic Hip-Hop Station, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Bun B, the Texas rap luminary who was formerly half of the rap duo UGK, will introduce the film and discuss his longtime friendship with Nas following the dance performances.
“Shake the Dust” – from executive producer Nas, who provides original music for the film, and journalist-turned-filmmaker Adam Sjöberg – chronicles the influence of breakdancing and hip-hop, exploring how they strike a resonant chord in slums, favelas and ghettos around the world and far beyond. Showcasing some of the most jaw-dropping breakdancing moves ever committed to film, the feature documentary shot in Colombia, Cambodia, Uganda and Yemen is an inspiring tribute to the uplifting power of music and movement.
Julydoscope coincides with Flea by Night, which takes place from 6-10 p.m. on July 18 in the southeast end of Discovery Green near The Grove restaurant. The monthly, one-of-a-kind flea market is also free to attend and features an array of artful kitsch, vintage items, mid-century modern furniture, recycled and repurposed items and collectibles.
